My name is Alexia and I am a student at Clayton Elementary. Students that go to your school aren’t being treated fairly, and I have some suggestions for you to make school a better environment for children like me. For starters, I feel that the way you punish your students for “doing something wrong” should be less harsh. Nowadays, if kids misbehave, they receive a detention, or get some free time taken away from them. That’s another thing, I know that your school gives free time to students but the way they use their free time is forced like most of the things they do.
Students that go to elementary schools are sent home every day at around 2:30 to 3:00. But your students are obligated by law to stay in school from September to June. You take a child’s innocence when you tell them that they are going to be taken away from their family for 10 months and only let go for 2 months in the summer. Also taking away from a child is the lies that they are told. If they get up from bed past 5:00, the devils hiding under the bed will come out and drag them away to a place that you all know kids are afraid of. They are basically starved and I think that if they were let to go home every day, they would come back with healthy lunches instead of the mush that they get fed every day.
Make learning things fun for the kids, because not every kid enjoys being taught things that no one explains to them. Teachers should be trained to deal with kids, maybe going to school for a certain amount of time the way that is needed to be a teacher nowadays. Fun in learning is what makes students come back every day; students come to school to be with their friends; boys and girls. The wall in between the cafeteria separating boys and girls should be knocked down. Let boys and girls sit together because when people are told not to do things, it makes them want to do them even more, but at your school, the punishments are what keep students in line.
I do believe that a student should be punished if they have done something wrong, but not by whipping or strapping them. If I had to strap someone, I would feel heartless, I mean, they’re just kids. Their childhood should be remembered in a happy way, it’s what they look back on and tell their future kids about. I am proud to say that my childhood is one that I will remember forever and in a very, very good way. I remember my first Christmas, it was with my mom and dad and I remember the smell of the fake tree and the one present that I got. Since I was not even one, I didn’t even care that I only got one present I was just happy that I had received something to play with, you know how kids are, always wanting something or someone to play with. I remember living in my hometown in Romania, because I wasn’t born here in Canada. But I am proud of my heritage and I had an amazing three and a half years there. These kids should be able to feel emotions, happiness, sadness, and forgiveness. Without being able to feel, what is there to enjoy.
So again, I ask of you to give these children the childhood that they deserve. Treat them with love; treat them like your own. In a way, a school should be like a family, we should be able to walk down the hallway holding hands with a friend, then they are happy and when kids are happy, they take in the information that you’re teaching them way better and they understand the concept better. If you would like the kids in your school to succeed and be joyful, listen to my advice.
